Adidas officially launched the Brazuca on December 4th, 2014. The ball was unveiled at the start of a spectacular 3D light projection at the legendary Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro. Brazuca was named after a referendum held in Brazil in September 2012, attended by one million football fans. The name “Brazuca” is an informal local term meaning “Brazilian” or describing the Brazilian way of life. The color of the ball trims and the design of the ribbon symbolize the traditional colorful wish bracelets (fita do Senhor do Bonfim da Bahia) worn in this country and reflect the vibrancy and fun associated with Brazilian football.

The previous World Cup ball (Jabulani) was not very popular with many players and fans and adidas wanted to avoid a similar situation happening again. That’s why the Brazuca went through an extensive two-and-a-half-year testing process involving more than 600 of the world’s best players and 30 teams in 10 countries on 3 continents, making the Brazuca adidas’ most-tested ball of all time. This makes it the most tested ball of all time. Clubs participating in the test are AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Palmeiras and Fluminese. Players involved in this process included world football stars Leo Messi, Iker Casillas, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Zinedine Zidane. This ball has already been tested with a different print design in international matches at the FIFA U-20 World Cup and was used in a friendly between Sweden and Argentina in February 2013.

The Brazuca’s bladder and in-body technology are the same as the official balls of Tango 12 (UEFA Euro 2012), Cafusa (FIFA Confederations Cup 2013) and the ever-popular UEFA Champions League. However, a new structural innovation with the unique symmetry of 6 identical panels – yes, the number of panels continues to decrease compared to previous World Cup balls (1970-2002: 32 panels, 2006: 14 panels, 2010: 8 panels, 2014: 6 panels) – Different surface structures for better grip, touch, stability and aerodynamics on the pitch. Although Nike was the sponsor of the Brazil national team, Dani Alves said: “My first impression of the Brazuca is that the ball is great and a lot of fun.” Because of that we created an incredibly beautiful ball. Most importantly, he can play well both on the ground and in the air. We are sure all players will love it. It increases my excitement even more and I honestly can’t wait for the first game!”
Spain world champion captain Iker Casillas said: Now that the ball has started, the tournament is getting much closer. I’m looking forward to playing with a great ball in Brazil. We hope to get the same result as in 2010 with Brazuca. Looking at the World Cup results, Spain has not won the title for the fourth time in a row after Eurocup 2008, World Cup 2010 and Eurocup 2012. The Brazuca material was the same as the Tango 12. This is another example where the balls are the same but the team effort and luck are not.
