When Will Earth End 2012 – This world is likely to end in December 2012. But I don’t believe the ancient Mayan calendar for its predictions, says an expert on Mesoamerican culture.
It is true that the so-called long calendar – which is about 5,125 years starting in 3114 BC – came to the end of a cycle on December 21, 2012.
When Will Earth End 2012
That day marked the 13th Baktun of the Mayan calendar, about 400 years long.

But instead of moving on to the next buck’tun, the calendar will be reset at the end of the 13th cycle, according to which the 1960 car will hit 99,999.9 miles and reset to zero.
“We certainly know it means a hundred [miles], not zero,” said William Saturno, an expert on Maya archeology at Boston University.
“So, is [Bak’tun 13’s ending] a good time to end? Yes. Did Maya like the last time? Yes,” Saturno said.
“Do they think this will be the last season? You bet. The biggest final they’ve ever experienced is a Baktoon final.”

Instead, for the Maya, the end of the long reading marked the end of an old life and the beginning of a new one, according to Emiliano Galaga Murrieta, director of the Chiapas State Department of the National Institute of Anthropology and History.
“It’s like Kannada, it’s the year [of the rabbit], and next year it’ll be the year of the dragon, and the next one will be another animal on the calendar,” Gallaga said.
Written references to the end of Bak’tun 13 are few. In fact, many Maya scholars say only one: a stone tablet on Monument 6 at the archaeological site of Tortuguero in the Mexican state of Tabasco. (Take the Maya quiz.)
However, scholars have taken several stabs at the definition, most famously in 1996 by Stephen Houston of Brown University and David Stuart of the University of Texas at Austin.

The first interpretation by Houston and Stuart suggests that God will descend at the end of Baktun 13. It is not certain what will happen next, although scholars say it may be a prophecy.
According to Stuart, this 1996 analysis has been brought up “on many New Age websites, related forums and some book chapters” as evidence that the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world.
Houston and Stuart, however, recently independently re-examined the glyphs and concluded that the title may not contain accurate predictive information in 2012.
Instead, the reference to the end of Bak’tun 13 is perhaps a forward-looking statement that points to the main theme of the title, which is the dedication of Monument 6.

In an October blog post about his decisions, Stewart compared him to a writer who wanted to immortalize the New York Yankees’ 1950 sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies in that year’s World Series.
If this author uses the Maya rhetorical device found in the Monument 6 inscription, the text might read:
“On October 7, 1950, the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies to win the World Series. It was 29 years after the first Yankees won the World Series in 1921. And 50 years ago in 2000, the Yankees won the World Series.”
Written in this way, Stuart points out, the text refers to the future of the historical significance of the 50th anniversary of the victory—but it does so in the context of a present event, namely, the game of the 1950s.

According to INAH’s Gallaga, this arrangement of Maya texts baffles the modern mind, giving us a sense of direct reading.
Although the title of Monument 6 refers to God coming down at the end of Baktun 13, it is not a statement about the end of the world, he said.
He wrote a poem and said, “Well, on the twenty-first day of December 2012, God will come down and begin a great change, and the old world will die, and the new world will be born again”. – just to make it more poetic.”
Saturno, an archaeologist at Boston University, agreed that the reference to a specific day is clear in Revelation 6, but added that “there is no further text that says the world will end, and the world will end in fire. . . . It is nowhere in the text.”

Instead, Saturno says, the confusion around 2012 was a result of disaffected Westerners looking to the ancients for guidance, hoping that people like the Maya knew something back then that ‘could help us in our time of crisis.
In any case, although the ancient writings clearly predicted the end of the world, Saturno would not have been concerned with the longer Maya prophecies.
