But this assured performance of the lead role cannot save the heavy script and mediocre production, where the tension drops, the plot holes abound and the action does not pay off.
Danielle Portman plays Nicholas Garrigan, a fresh-faced Scottish doctor who becomes Amin’s personal physician. A bubbly romantic who gets dirty, he sees the new president as a ray of hope for the country. But Harrigan’s intentions were never clear. Since Amin’s charm is so instantly overshadowed by his brutality in Steve Waters’ altered timeline, we don’t understand why the willfully ignorant and quick-to-plug doctor is so enamored with the president; He had to close his eyes so quickly that the rest of the show was spinning in place. As his ethical standards are violated very early on, his cowardice increases and our sympathy for him diminishes considerably.
Waters brings some elements of the story closer to historical fact by having Harrigan himself fall in love with his second wife Amin Kaye (a perfectly composed Akuch Ball) instead of Harrigan’s co-star Peter Mbalu-Mukasa (a delightful John Omole). In the desperation of under-the-table abortions, we first really feel the fear of the Amin regime. The broader context of terrorism is expressed in international news bulletins that are not structured. Meanwhile, Harrigan’s love life falls apart when he tries to kiss a British diplomat’s wife on a lazy fishing trip, a scene so unnecessary you wonder if they’re just trying to pass the time.
This story of coups, protests and torture is almost nothing short of drama; It should be epic. But it was delayed. As the final half hour spectacularly devolves into high school-style play and storytelling, the action begins to feel as flimsy as the plastic limbs torn off the stage.
